Leading others into the Kingdom of God

One day a man of high rank and influence arrived at a small community. Rather than appear with opulent fanfare, he came dressed in the demeanor of humility and compassion. He took an interest in each individual that he met and developed relationship with the people in his community. Over time, he established trust among the people that were in his immediate sphere of influence.

Then a day came when this person attended a public meeting. The facilitators of the meeting called out his name and asked him to speak. Most in the audience knew this person. He had lived among them for many years. They had witnessed his upright character and knew how diligent he was at conducting his business. He had walked in integrity and performed his duties with diligence and in a spirit of excellence.

When the facilitator called upon him to read from their sacred book, everyone’s eyes were riveted upon the gentleman. He rose to take his place at the podium and graciously received the book. The passage he was assigned to read was opened for him, and from his mouth were heard these gracious words;

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19)

The Greatest Leader of all…

The greatest leader that ever lived is Jesus Christ. His purpose was clear: to inaugurate the kingdom of God on earth. His message was simple: “Turn around, for the time to enter the kingdom of God has come!” Since He arrived, His influence has impacted societies for over 2000 years. To this day, the message of the kingdom of God continues to have a profound impact upon people from every nation.

Many people have asked the question: “What is a leader?” Some say that leadership is influence. This is certainly true. But effective leadership has a more definitive purpose. Perhaps a more specific definition of a leader is this: “A leader is someone that can influence others to achieve a worthwhile goal for the common good.” This is what Jesus Christ did when He came to earth, and this is what God is calling all of His people to do!

Leading others into the Kingdom of God…

Just before the Lord Jesus Christ ascended back to the Father, He gave His disciples the authority to proclaim the message of the kingdom of God (Matthew 28:19-20). This authority has never been rescinded. As a follower of Jesus, you too are called to proclaim the message of His kingdom.

The message of the kingdom of God is all about the rule of Christ in our hearts. When you receive Him as your personal Savior and Lord, you perceive or see the reality of His kingdom (or rule). You enter the kingdom of God when you are baptized in water and in the Holy Spirit (see John 3:3, 5). From that time, you put off your old, sinful life and embrace your new life in Christ. You have a new identity as a son or daughter of the Most High God. As you continue to follow Christ and learn of Him, you become like Him in character, as well as in competence. And the blessings of the kingdom of God will abound in every area of your life. Thus, when people see you, they see someone that is living under the rule of Christ.

I believe that God wants each of us to proclaim the kingdom of God. We are each called to lead people through what we say and how we live. Thereby, we help others to perceive the reality of the kingdom of God.

Perhaps you are asking yourself, “Who will listen to me?” You may not feel qualified to lead others. I am not suggesting that you lead others by relying on your gifts and ability. Rather, Christ is living in you and the Holy Spirit is helping you lead and influence others. As a son or daughter of God, your words and deeds have a profound effect upon others!

The kingdom of God is not merely a future reality, it is here now! You are God’s ambassador. Go therefore, and proclaim His message: “The rule of Christ has come. Turn around and enter the kingdom of God!”
